thx benny for your reply again, but i am curious as to why ‘gei3 hui2’ doesnt make sense.. i mean if i wanna say ‘call back’, i would say ‘da3 hui2’ right? if i wanna say ‘please on back the tv’, i would say “qing3 kai1 hui2 dian4 shi4” ya? if my sentences above are right then ‘give back’ should be ‘gei3 hui2’ ? sorry, i am abit confused on the usage of hui2 here..hope you can help me to clear this up.. thanks

| | Benny the Mandarin Teacher bennysland.com 2008-07-06 / 08:41PM | | Hi Henry, huí does mean “back”, but it can only be used with certain verbs. Either after or before. We don’t have “gěi huán” and “kāi huí” as structure. There is no rules, because they are arbitrary. Also the rules in English doesn’t apply for Chinese
By the way to return is “huán gěi”
