the difference between pinyin and Mandarin is: Mandarin is the overall language of Chinese, while pinyin is the spelling of the sound. Well, people speak diff. dialects in diff. areas. Mandarin is the standard one that is most frequently used in the country in cooperation with pinyin. By learning pinyin, you’ll be able to know how to pronounce the characters.
cheers.
