thank you benny for your reply, I want to ask another thing, can ji4 (计) be used as a standalone word? because from www.mandarintools.com it says ‘to compute’ or ‘to calculate’

Hi Micahw,
You shall use “ji suan” when you want to say “to calculate” or just “suan” for short. Only “ji” does not make any sense in Chinese.

It does mean “to calculate or compute” but it can’t be used alone
