Catonese is a local language in Guangdong (one of province in China) and Hong Kong.

Cantonese is spoken in Hong Kong and some parts of Southern China.
Mandarin is the common language for Chinese people, Puatonghua

Cantonese and Mandarin are very different, just as Vicki said, one is local language while the other is the common language which is widely used in China
