Hello, Benny…or, should I say. 你好。

I’m not sure how long it will take you to see this message, but I work in a tourist location and deal with foreign visitors all the time. We get lots of guest from all over asia — China, included. I like to be able to at least tell people how much things cost in their own language if they’re struggling with English.

I can’t find any information on the internet about how to say complex dollar amounts. I know how to say five bucks or 10 bucks or anything like that, but I sell photos for $9.64 and would like to know how to say that. Would I say “九塊六十四。” or could I just say “nine sixty-four” as “九六十四。”?

Any help on understanding how to say “<blank> dollars and <blank> cents” or anything like that would be great.

謝謝。再見。

Michael

Hi mst0068,

To say the amount of the dollars, you need to learn 2 words.

1. yuan2 / kuai4 = currency

2. jiao3 = 10 cents

For example:

1. USD 9.64 = jiǔ kuài / yuán liù jiǎo sì(no need to say the word “cent”)

2. USD 3.68 = sān kuài/ yuán liù jiǎo bā

2. USD 3.68 = sān kuài/ yuán liù jiǎo bā
