Hi Benny and Bennyians.
The words 女朋友 and 男朋友 are defined as “girlfriend” and “boyfriend” respectively in Beginning Chinese books. But unless I’m mistaken, I ran into a text that implied that they can also just mean “(female) friend” and “(male) friend” [respectively] in a similar manner as the Spanish words “amiga” and “amigo”. Is my observation correct?
amigo = friend who is male
amiga = friend who is female
novio = boyfriend or fiancé
novia = girlfriend or fianceé.

If you would like to say: male and female friend in Chinese we say:
女的朋友 = female friend
男的朋友 = male friend
